Running Like Huskies

Just as a sled dog team can cover long distances in great time, so too can our Microdry Pet leadership team. Two of our executives completed the Scotia Bank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on October 14th. Antony Pereira, our Global Controller, and Edin Mesic, our Chief Supply Chain Officer, set out under rainy skies at the start of the beautiful metropolitan course, but were treated to some sunlight for the last few miles. Antony finished in 4:30:40 and Edin in 4:04:58.

Haunting Hounds

The annual Halloween Dog Parade in New York City’s Tompkin’s Square Park took place this past Saturday. It’s an incredible display of creativity and canines that really is a must-see Halloween tradition in NYC. We certainly hope that these pups got treated to comfortable accommodations post-parade. Check out a great slide show of costumes here.

Pound Puppies

With about 53% of the canine population weighing in at obese levels, a cottage industry of dog exercise products is developing and growing fast. This treadmill caught our eye both for its good looks and a price tag that will certainly help wallets get skinnier. We’re still fans of encouraging people to get out and play with their dogs as the physical fitness benefits are accompanied by human-hound bondingm too. Plus, the necessary accessories are much softer and cheaper.

A Book With Bite

Famed Hollywood hound Uggie, star or at least the scene-stealer in the Academy Award-winning film The Artist, may have retired from cinema, but he’ll be back in the spotlight this coming Tuesday with the release of his biography. He evidently barked the text to his owner, who captures his adventures before the camera and behind the scenes. One bit that’s sure to be tabloid fodder: Uggie had regular kissing sessions with Reese Witherspoon on the set of Water for Elephants. Uggie will be doing book “barkings” around the nation to support his book, so there’s a chance you and your pup can meet the little four-legged thespian.

The Dog’s Breakfast

That’s what your dog might feel like if it skips breakfast. A recent study shows that just like people, dogs perform and behave better when they’ve had a good breakfast. So, if you have your pup out early for a pre-breakfast walk and they seem less focused, you might want to carry treats to help them fuel up!

Halloween Hounds

Martha Stewart has unleashed her latest ideas for canine costumes (and one feline one, too!) If you’re the crafty sort, start threading your needle and follow her instructions to outfit your dog for some four-legged trick or treating.

Taking Care of Your Dog’s Bones

We found a great article on how to help arthritic pets stay happy and healthy by vet Donna Solomon. We would add two things to her list of helpful dietary and lifestyle changes: provide your dog with soft, cushioned bed to help relieve pressure on their joints and keep them warm in cold weather.

Dogonomics

Part of being a responsible dog or cat owner is having the finances to provide proper care. The average pet costs about $1,251 per year, but you can bring the costs down by following the advice in this column by personal finance guru Jean Chatzky. Of course, the one thing you won’t want to skimp on is a supportive bed to reduce wear and tear on sensitive joints, and thus visits to the vet, too.

Fat Farm for the Furry Set

America’s first pet obesity clinic has opened its doors to treat chubby canines and flabby felines. As with humans, obesity in pets can result in diabetes, heart troubles and joint problems. If your hound is on the heavy side, you should look to improving their diet, increasing exercise and providing proper support for the bones and joints that are carrying the extra load.
